Bibliography:

Below, I have documented a list of multiple books and comics that I have been inspired by during my final major project. With each book cover section, I will breakdown the significance to why I creatively benefitted from each resource and how I used specific information, developing it and applying my knowledge into my comic final piece.

Marvel Comics - Infinity Volume 1

Influenced by the character cast format on the first inside page of the comic. This helps establish and contextualise the characters involved in the narrative, as well as grouping similar temperaments together with a subtitle.

Marvel Comics - Gwenpool Volume 1

I was heavily influenced from the Gwenpool comic. I used this comic as a format to craft and make my own. By dissecting the structure of book, I made measurements to make my comic fit in with the standard size of regular marvel comics.

When I was producing my front cover, I used this as an example of the placement of the barcode, text and additional details.

Within the comic, there were advertisement pages. These pages insert the information to potentially get publicity and sales, however they also mark up as an end of a chapter to break up the narrative of the main storyline. Being inspired from this, I wanted to create my own advertisement pages, but the focus would be based around the Coronavirus outbreak and lockdown.

I adopted this style of this specific advertisement I found within the Gwenpool comic pages. The ad has a mixture of product placement imagery, using photographs, as well as having balance with a comic style. This technique I used when creating my own created advertisement pages.

Marvel Comics - Spider Geddon Volume 1

This comic is a personal favourite of mine due to the insane variety of different Spider-Man variations, as well as the adventure and strong narrative line.

The dialogue style and features I also took inspiration from. In both example images, above and below, show an enlarged location subtitle in the top left corner. The Superior Octopus speech dialogue bubble technique I also adopted, as it is an impactful way to emphasis key information when characters are speaking.

Marvel Comics - Wolverine and Deadpool:

The main feature of the Wolverine and Deadpool comic I was inspired by was using the front cover as another reference for when creating my own. Looking at a range of comic front covers is an important exercise. It helps to show where the barcode and text is located, as well as understanding different dynamic character compositions. All these details are in efforts to capture the reader in an impactful way.

Death Note:

From the Death Note graphic novel series, this style inspired me to create dramatic, high contrast and dynamic lines to add a further layer of dimension and vivid imagery. The line work is very significant as within the graphic novel, the  pages are black and white. By utilising the boldness of the black and white contrast, the use of lines and tone is very crucial in the portrayal of the narrative, especially if no colour is used as well.

V For Vendetta:

The aesthetic of V for Vendetta is similar to Death Note, by having a high contrast and dark narrative focus. I found the continuous use of watercolour to be effective. I wasn't particularly inspired by the use of watercolour as a medium, however the stylistic approach by choosing one style of media and developing it within the comic.

The watercolour effect also adds a nice washed out colour effect. Not having the colour scheme overpower the high contrast of the dark line work.

Sourire 58:

Visually, I would say that Sourire 58 is the closest representation of the style of my comic. Despite the fact that both comics are created digitally with black outline features, the approaches are similar. Both comics have a selected colour scheme, as well as subtle features of texture from the use of digital brushes.

Dynamite - Barbarella Dejah Thoris Volume 2:

Comic artist Zach Hsieh, is really influential on my final major piece. I took a lot of my villain character inspiration from this high contrast style, seen in Hsieh created Barbarella front cover. His crosshatching technique and his attention to detail, I find to be extremely powerful. It creates a gritty, dark but dynamic style of illustrating. I really admire this visual style and wanted to adopt features into my own comic book.
